Okra is an amazingly fast crop. I used to think of it in the same category as tomatoes, needing a very early start. But this dwarf variety can go from seed to table in about 50 days--about the same as a head of lettuce!. This heirloom from Louisiana seems to perform well anywhere that okra can possibly grow. I have had good yields here in the California mountains, where summer nights have lows in the 50's.. Cajun Jewel is able to handle summers in Maine or the Pacific Northwest, and that's saying a lot. Small plants fit in wherever you have a corner to spare, or in a tub. Okra is related to hibiscus, and the flowers are similar. I have had very good luck growing it in large pots; The flowers are decorative enough for the patio, and the closer they are to the house, the easier it is to pick them when they are small and tender. The main thing with okra is to pick it promptly before it gets fibrous and tough. 4 days after flower drop is about right. I like it fried crisp. 40 seeds
